FAQs

Be sure to read through this information and then email us if you have further questions. You can reach us at faroutvbc@yahoo.com

What is FaR Out?
FaR Out is a volleyball club that desires to help young athletes improve their volleyball skills in a positive environment.  We do this through competitive club teams for grades 6-12, a youth program for K-6th graders, camps during Christmas break, spring break, and over the summer, as well as private lessons.

Who are the coaches at FaR Out?  We have a great group of lead coaches who will oversee the training at practice and assist team coaches at tournaments.  Our team coaches are mostly former or collegiate players who share the same goals of our club to educate participants in a positive environment.  Please look over our current coaching staff.  We will add bios of each coach soon.

How much are the club fees for the 2011-2012 season?
Regional teams will be $1250
Local teams will be $550 per season
Payment Schedules can be found here.

What do the club fees cover?
Fees cover facility rental, equipment, membership in local organizations, tournament fees, uniforms, insurance, instruction, printing, postage, and other administrative costs.

What don't the club fees cover?  Your additional costs will include your personal travel expenses to tournaments. Each player’s family will be expected to pay for the coach’s hotel expenses at each tournament. We expect all players to attend each tournament, but if for some reason a player cannot attend they are still responsible for their share of the coach’s hotel room. The team travel coordinator will coordinate the collection of these fees. You will also be required to purchase your AAU membership, which is approximately $12.

What is included in the uniform package?  All teams will receive 2 Mizuno uniforms, 1 pair of kneepads, 1 pair of spandex, 2 practice t-shirts, 1 pair of sweatpants, 1 hoody sweatshirt, and 1 sling bag. We are a Mizuno sponsored organization.

When are tryouts for the 2011-2012 club season?
All age groups will have two separate tryout sessions.  The first session for 12s/13s/14s will be Sunday, Nov. 6.  All other age groups will start on Sunday, Nov. 20.  The complete schedule is posted with exact times and locations.

What are tryouts like?
During the tryout we put the participants through many individual and team drills so our many evaluators can determine their current ability level.  Specific drills vary on the age and ability of participants.  Parents are not allowed to observe the tryout sessions.

What is the age breakdown for the 2011-2012 club season?
12 and under – 9.1.99 – 8.31.01
13 and under – 9.1.98 – 8.31.99
14 and under – 9.1.97 – 8.31.98
15 and under – 9.1.96 – 8.31.97
16 and under – 9.1.95 – 8.31.96
17 and under – 9.1.94 – 8.31.95
18 and under – 9.1.93 – 8.31.94

Can my daughter “play up” a level?  We like keep players in their own age group. Some instances do occur when players will play up a division, though, and those are handled on a case by case basis.

What is the difference between the team levels?
Regional teams will have 10 weekends of competition in Michigan, Indiana, & Illinois. These teams will begin practicing in December and will ideally compete together for the entire season. Regional teams will be evaluated and formed on ability, not strictly age group.  Local teams will have the opportunity to play in either the winter or spring season or both. Each season will include 4 one-day tournaments plus a two-day end of season tournament. All tournaments will be in the Grand Rapids area.

How many teams will FaR Out have per age division/level?
Regional 17/18 - 1
Regional 16 - 1
Regional 15/16 - 1
Regional 14/15 - 1
Local 15 - 2
Local 14 - 3
Local 13 - 2
Local 12 - 1

*These numbers are not definite, but they are a close ballpark.  The numbers of teams in each age division/level will depend on participation at tryouts, but we are confident that we have ample gym space and coaches for this amount of teams.

Will my daughter make a team if she participates in the tryouts?
We cannot guarantee that we will have a spot for every athlete who tries out for FaR Out.  We want to make sure we can do a quality job for the amount of teams we know we can handle.  We don't feel that putting teams together just to fill spots is a positive experience for the player, parents, or the club.

What is the tryout fee?
$50  This is a non-refundable fee.

What happens after my daughter is chosen for a team?
You will need to make your first payment installment by the due date (Season Kickoff) and complete the other pre-season requirements.  If you choose to withdraw your daughter from FaR Out after practice has begun, you will remain responsible for all club fees.

Are there fundraising options or scholarships available?  We do offer fundraising opportunities through the SCRIP program. The earlier you start on that, the better the result. You can apply money earned through that program to your club fees. We do offer some scholarships for players who have a financial need, as well as those with more than two participants from the same family. We require anyone who is interested in financial assistance to fill out a scholarship application, which will be reviewed by our club staff. Once it is reviewed, we will notify you of the decision. We will also be hosting some tournaments and will need workers at those events. Players needing financial assistance can work those events to earn money toward their club fees. We will not grant scholarships to families who do not complete the application form. Likewise, families are not guaranteed a scholarship if they complete the application form.

What if I want to play on a National team?
We would encourage you to attend tryouts for our combined club DFFO.  This is a partnership with Dead Frog VBC in Kalamazoo.  The difference you will receive with that club is additional practice time and more extensive travel commitment.

How long is the club season?
Regional teams begin practice the week of Dec. 12 and finish their season the first weekend in June.  Winter local teams begin the first week of January and conclude either March 11 or 18 depending on their age group.  Tryouts for spring local teams will be right after the winter season and will wrap up the first weekend in June.

When do we receive tournament information?
Once the club receives tournament information we distribute it to the team coaches and post on the Events tab on our website.  We have no control over how quickly it comes to us, but once it is received we distribute it right away.

Am I able to request players to be on a team with?
Only for local teams.  There is a spot on the tryout form for you to indicate if you would like to be placed with any other players for carpooling reasons. We will be placing players based on skill level first and carpooling requests second.

Can I try-out for both the combined club teams and for FaR Out?
Yes, you will be able to without paying multiple tryout fees. You will also have the option at the combined club tryouts to indicate if you would like to be considered for a team at either FaR Out or Dead Frog if you do not make a combined club team.

How many players are typically placed on a team?
On average we will place 9 players on each team.  This number is likely to be 10-11 players for an 18 & under team and a 12 & under team.

What is the typical practice time?
Practices will either be from 6-8:30 or 6:30-9 p.m. during the week.
